I have had this very annoying squeak coming from somewhere near the front of my car recently and am not entirely sure what it is. It doesn’t happen all the time and I can’t replicate it by bouncing the front of my car so I don’t think it’s the shocks. The body of the car has 190k miles on it so it could be damn near any bushing up front is my thought. Control arm, sway bar, ball joints, hell even engine mounts could be suspect. Any brilliant ideas on how to pinpoint this noise? I have gotten underneath a little and nothing looks glaringly broken/worn. It would be great to replace everything by throwing money at it but I don’t exactly have that kind of money on hand.

Try spraying each of the control arm bushings with penetrating oil, then taking a drive. If the squeak goes away, it’s the last one you sprayed (note: this won’t fix the issue much longer than it takes to make the diagnosis). This also works on the sway bar bushings...really any of the exposed bushings on the suspension.

This won’t work for the ball joints as they’re sealed inside a boot typically, but if it’s none of the control arm bushings or the sway bar bushings, it’s more likely to be the ball joints.

As far as I know, motor mounts and shocks on their way out are more likely to clunk than squeak, but that’s not a guarantee.

first things i would check, would be #1 lugnuts......#2 grab the top of the tire, and try to shake it in and out for all its worth(ball joints). #3 tie rod ends..... #4 steering arm/ drag links.............#5 a-arm bushings........ just about all the rest is minor stuff..........

The tire shake is a great test. If you’re not too worried about people killing you, do this to older cars in a parking lot, and be amazed at how many of them wiggle.

I’m thinking it’s not the ball joints since I do that test very frequently and have had no issues…

on the farthest outer reaches of squeaks..............once you have checked everything important, check that the fender bolts are all snug, and that its not the fenders, or core support, or hood wiggling that is causing the squeak.

fender bolts… oh the zip ties holding on the bumper! Well there’s a thought, I don’t those are very snug at all.
